SUCUPIRA

CROWN SUCUPIRA
CROWN SUCUPIRA
Also known as: : Black Sucupira, Sapupira, Supupira, Acapu
Botanical Name: Bowdichia spp., Vouacapoua americana
Origin: Northern South America, mainly Brazil
Description: Strictly, Sucupira is from the Bowdichia species and Acapu from Vouacapoua americana, but the two timbers closely resemble each other and the veneer tends to be marketed as one type. The colour varies somewhat from log to log but is usually a reddish brown to dark yellowy brown. It is a heavy and hard wood, polishes well and looks attractive when finished. Logs are usually flat-cut and the veneer, although not commonly used in the UK, can be usefully considered where a solid looking, dark appearance is called for.
