MAPLE, HARD
CROWN MAPLE
Also known as:
Maple (simply), Rock Maple, Sugar Maple, White Maple
Botanical Name:
Acer saccharum
Origin:
Canada and U.S.A.
Description:
Very popular furniture veneer in its usual unsteamed plain flat cut form. Maple commonly displays small light brown marks often referred to as “sugar” and it is not always easy to find material that is completely devoid of this characteristic. When figured, the logs may also be flat sliced but, depending on the type of figure, they may be rotary cut (peeled). Wavy grained material that has been rotary cut is often known as Curly Maple. Another highly decorative form is the well known Birds-Eye which, again, is usually peeled. Plain Maple is also available in 1.5mm and 2.5mm thicknessses. In recent years there has been some demand for steamed or “weathered” Maple veneer. For this the logs are cooked before slicing, changing the colour to pink. See also Maple, Soft.
