MAKORE
CROWN MAKORE
Also known as:
Cherry Mahogany, African Cherry, Douka
Botanical Name:
Tieghemella heckelii, T. africana
Origin:
West Africa
Description:
Neither a Cherry nor a Mahogany, this is a close textured African red wood with a lustrous surface. The logs are large and usually quartered. Most are of fairly ordinary quality and are commonly used for backing purposes. When particularly clean or attractively figured, the veneer is suitable for quality furniture and interior decoration. Those logs that reveal a strong fiddleback figure are particularly valuable and Pommele figured material is sometimes also produced. It should be noted when using Makore that the sanding dust has proved to be an irritant and it is important that effective dust extraction is employed.
