ASH, OLIVE
CROWN OLIVE ASH
Botanical Name:
Fraxinus excelsior
Origin:
Europe
Description:
Some Ash trees, as they mature, may develop a sound, browny coloured heart and the veneer from these is known as Olive Ash. The logs are sliced in the same way as for white Ash and occasional examples may display an attractive ripple figure. It is usual for the younger, white wood outside the heartwood to be left on the veneer at the trimming stage and this is commonly incorporated into the usage, giving a two-tone effect. Olive Ash burr veneer is also produced when logs are available. This is rarely a full burr, however, most logs being more butty and wild-grained by nature. It is, however, a veneer with real character and can be used to great effect on special furniture and for interior decoration.
