ACACIA (SHORT STEAMED) Also known as:
Robinia (correctly), false Acacia, Black Locust
Botanical Name:
Robinia pseudoacacia
Origin:
North America, Europe
Description:
This species, introduced into England from the USA between three and four hundred years ago, is now well established here. It is often seen planted for decorative effect in parks and gardens and also as a roadside tree. When freshly cut the colour is a lustrous greeny-yellow, dulling somewhat with age and exposure. If the log is steamed (cooked) for a short time only, this light shade is retained. Some however are kept in the tanks for up to three times longer and the resulting colour will then be darker. Some examples display pips and burr clusters which, together with the prominent growth structure, can give the veneer much character. Acacia veneer is mainly used for furniture and kitchens.
